Greetings,
Welcome
to the January and February edition of our Making
Business Smarter E-Newsletter!
As we
finish up the accounting for 2007 and start the new year, all of us at
SAGE thank you for being our clients. We continue to strive to provide
secure and reliable networks for you, with productivity that produces a substantial
return on your investment.
Looking
back on 2007, we saw significant gains in hardware performance and many
new software releases with enhanced user functionality and
maintainability. We also saw enormous increases in SPAM and associated
Denial of Services (DOS) attacks, new and more aggressive virus and
Trojan Horse attacks, and more sophisticated human engineering attacks.
The SAGE Security Practice is now 9 months old, and has been
critical in protecting our clients’ networks from the latest threats.
Please see our article Security Quickies for some ideas or pick up the
phone and call us if you have any questions.
As we
look forward to 2008, we see more hardware and software improvements.
SonicWALL has released a new series of firewalls which are able to
provide full Unified Threat Management (UTM) services at FIOS and other
high internet service speeds. Microsoft will release Windows Server 2008
and SQL 2008 in February. We expect Microsoft to release the next version
of Small Business Server later this year or early next year. More and
more application software is being upgraded to be Vista compliant. When
the software you use to run your business is Vista ready, we can help you
take advantage of its improved productivity and security.
As
always, we appreciate your business.

How to get
Treatment for Email Overload
By Craig Davis, SLPowers

Corporate workers are now
spending as much as 40% of their time dealing with email. I personally
have come to expect between 100 and 150 emails every business day. From
the important, such as a new customer requesting information to the
mundane, such as an endless chain of email discussions between
colleagues. It's come to the point where the issue can no longer be
ignored. I've assembled a list of tips that you can use to help keep
the problem at bay, at least until software catches up and solves the
issue for us.

“that could save your bacon”
Choose
a password that's hard to crack
When choosing a password, try to make it by writing a sentence that you
can easily remember. For example: "Los Angeles Lakers will win the
NBA tournament this year". Then pick up the first letters of each
word and also add at the beginning or at the end (or at both parts)
some special characters and numbers. For example, with the last
sentence you could get the password: =3LALwwtNtty$. This method lets
you come up with easy-to-remember passwords that are also hard to
crack. And you avoid the need to write such a long password down in
order to remember it.

Be
careful with cybercafé computers
Cybercafés offer a convenient way to use a networked computer when you
are away from home or office, but be careful. It's impossible for an
ordinary user to tell what the state of their security might be. Since
anyone can use them for anything, they have probably been exposed to
viruses, worms, Trojans, keyloggers, and other nasty malware. Should you
use them at all? They're okay for casual web browsing, but they're NOT
okay for connecting to your email, which may contain personal
information; to any secure system, like the network or server at your
office, bank or credit union; or for shopping online.
